This YAP class of 2007 will be students entering the 7th to 9th grade.  The students will spend a week studying the fascinating world of plants. The students will learn how to build a hydroponic growing system, and conduct an experiment to test the best fertilizer to use.  We will learn about plant cloning using traditional asexual propagation methods, using tissue culture and using genetic engineering.  The students will work in a tissue culture laboratory and produce aseptic clones, and visit a genetic engineering lab to observe how "genes are cloned and transfered" to make genetically modified organisms (GMO).  In addition, the students will learn the traditional methods of cloning plant using cuttings, layering and grafting.. We will tour our botanical collection and observe the "weird world" of carnivorous plants, plants that grow on plants, plants that "resurrect" from the dead, plants that look like rocks, plants that smell (both good and bad!), and much more.   The students will learn plant taxonomy and how to  identify a plant’s name.  The student will spend a half day collecting bugs and other creepy crawlers, and then identify them in the lab.  We will tour a "foods for health lab" and learn how healthy foods help cure cancer and heart disease; we will even make and eat a "Foods for Health Rainbow Salad".  And at the end of week, the students will learn express their "artistc side" and learn how to create a floral design.
