Practice Writing a Scientific Name
Rules For Using a Key In order to successfully "key out" a plant, it is important to keep the following rules in mind.
Read both contrasting statements (a couplet) completely. Even if the first choice sounds correct, the second may be more correct.
If a term is unfamiliar, look up its definition--do not guess!
Make measurements with a ruler--do not guess!
Nature is highly variable, look at several samples before deciding. Never rely on just one sample.
If in doubt about a choice, follow it both ways, then choose between the final plant names given.
